Week 6: RAIZ / Pila del Bautismo‏

Pila del bautismo

Wonderful last night--your projects, and the stories you shared (even when difficult). Ideas y sentimientos importantes--una revelación... Gracias a todos! Tony
_____

READING: Octavio Paz, Conquista y colonia. Las culturas originarias (autoctonas, pre-cortesianas, "indigenas") de mesoamerica. And how they came to accommodate Spanish rule (including the Church). Note what Don Octavio has to say about the "complete world" imposed by Spain. What it provided. And how he counters the chamula texts ("indigenous" renderings of scripture) which in effect show us how los pueblos originarios accomplished this accommodation (p. 117 in the Spanish edition, pps. 106-107 in the translation).

Consider what Paz says about the "abandonment" of the Gods... and why the Virgen de Guadalupe  (Tonantzin, the female deity, "la madre del maíz") emerged in their place... How her figure became a meeting point of the two worlds... (You'll need to review la Malinche chapter as well--his discussion of la madre...)

PROJECT: For this week: imagine yourself as of them--one of these peoples, pueblos originarios--in the terms described by Don Octavio. How do you find a place in "this new world?" Look at images of early baptismal fonts in México--how they represent the two worlds...

MUSICA: Continue with José Alfredo and Cuco Sanchez. (Their songs warrant a careful listening.) How do they cast this question in personal terms? (And at a distance of 450 years...) How is this question part of your own world?

And here's a selection of YouTube vidoes. There's a lot, all related to the new theme--so pick and chose which to draw on. We'll lopok at Las Mañanitas (the Pedro Infante film) together in class.

And some "ethnographic" home videos (I showed parts in class). That is, real places, real-time from today... El pasado hecho presente? O....?

Y placer a felicitarte

El dia en que tu naciste
Nacieron todas las flores
Y en la plia del bautismo
Cantaron los ruisenores

Ya viene amaneciendo
Ya la luz del dia nos vio
Levantate de manana
Mira que ya amanecio
