Week 15: S&P México: Cancionero Mexicano: download y letra completa‏ +

(Note for new readers: these posts present the course projects from week to week, working back to the beginning of the semester.)

https://rapidshare.com/files/865620027/S%26P%20Mexico-Cancionero%20mexicano.zip

Recordings of all the songs in our cancionero--my favorite versions, sometimes with alternates. You have most all of these in the various downloads from over the semester, but this new download will give you all the songs in one listenable playlist--and in the order they occur in the songsheets. I'd like you to use it to review everything we've learned (sometimes we just did a song once or twice) and know them well enough so that we can dip in anywhere during the fiesta next week...and beyond.
Qué se van escuchando--y aprovechando...

Also included, a running set of all the lyrics in one document. There are still a few typos no doubt, but this is my best current draft. Share with friends as you wish, of course...

Week 14: Carlos Monsiváis essay‏

José Alfredo Jiménez

I mentioned this last night, early on--a Lola Beltrán CD and the link to the Carlos Monsiváis essay on José Alfredo --for those whose Spanish is fluent, I know you'll find this important. Everto y Vreni (y  Lucia y Carolina?) en particular. It's a model of how one can write with intelligence (and not just style) about popular culture...

And the Chavela cd's (from late in her career)--bringing us full  circle. Not a bad thing!

Tony

ps. I know you won't have time for all this, but  do read Monsiváis, and build the downloads into future playlists as well...
_____________

Las Bravías. Here's a download of Lola Beltrán singing her versions of the songs of José Alfredo Jiménez:
LOLA BELTRAN:  http://rapidshare.com/files/2071727145/S%26P%20Mexico%20Lola%20Beltran%20.zip

And a LINK to PDF of Carlos Monsiváis ensayo, "José Alfredo Jiménez: Les diré que llegué de un mundo raro." This is a beautiful essay (in Spanish) that was published as the introduction to  a book of José Alfredo songs. The way Carlos Monsiváis includes his story of Chavela Vargas here brings us full circle for the course:

And finally, two later albums from--y quién más--CHAVELA VARGAS:

Weeks 12-13: LAS MEXICANAS II

Chavela Vargas

Hola--this is a continuation of last week's email. The vidoes I showed you last night are all below. With the exception of los panchitos (la vida es un sueño) which is easily found on youtube. The class took an unusual turn--it seemed right to me to let that happen (thanks to Natalia por las danzas tradicionales!) (and because of Angelica's presence). And several of you went in and out--which is always  a challenge in terms of continuity. But it's that time of year--and a full full moon.

COMENTRIO: I was sorry to miss  talking about more of the work. "El Brazo" de Kevin--obra bonita! And Mike's Los Angeles. Good channeling... And Alejandro's drawings, which had a nice direct character. And Valdemar's illuminated paper cup--me parecía la obra más abierta que has hecho, buena cosa... And we barely peeked at Ariel's projects, which are always a pleasure to discover more fully. Qué lástima./ And I'd have wanted to know more about Gigie's dark road... There were others, too--the small but  very nicely done paintings by Naomi (little pink one in particular) and Doha's, which maybe you'll comment on en tu cuaderno. And Peony...

So, keep on with LAS MEXICANAS, listen to the songs, check out the videos! You know that I find it important to know who's singing, and what the song is--many of you are much more casual about this--maybe that's something having to do with this time we live in.  I've always found it meaningful to know--to go on learning--and the specifics are part of this...

Next week will be our last regular class--bring new work, together with projects from this week. FIESTA on May 9.   We'll make some plans for this en la próxima!   Tony

Weeks 12-13: LAS MEXICANAS‏ I

China Poblana

VS 185X S&P México: Week 10-11: Las Mexicanas: Cantantes / Hermanas  / Bravías

WORDS: China Poblana, Callejera, Cosechador (these are my suggestions--find your own, too, from the songs!)

DOWNLOADS:
Elvira Ríos:

Las Hermanas Padilla, Las Jilguerillas
http://rapidshare.com/files/3451782824/S%26P%20Mexico%20Las%20Hermanas%20Padilla_Las%20Jilguerillas.zip

READING: Best approach this week is to use online sources (wiki or wiki in Spanish) to look into biographies of the musicians. Follow your own lead.

YOUTUBE: The following songs are all a treasure--todas un tesoro--but a lot for even two weeks. So I pass them on to you as future starting points, and because I've myself enjoyed them greatly during the years. For the next two  weeks, however, let me suggest this approach: listen to the first song or two for each set (each artist, each duo), then go back, listen to more from the set(s) you like in particular--and use this as a way to concentrate for your project. Start with the downloads above, then make your way through the YouTube selections, many with film clips!

Week 12: Elvira Ríos (download), Toña la Negra, Hermanas Águila (singing in the early 1930s) and Lucha Reyes.

Week 13: Las Hermanas Padilla, Las Jilguerillas  (download), and the you tube selections below (from Las Hermanas Huerta to contemporary Lila Downs)

There's a lineage here, which you should know about: the early singers like Toña la Negra and Elvira Ríos (wonderful) and Las Hermanas Águila (often with songs by Agustin Lara). The cross-over figure to the "bravía" ranchera tradition is Lucha Reyes, late 1930s. I've included film clip from La Tequilera, 1941--same period,  although note that the actress is someone other than Lucha Reyes. Then come the ranchera singers en sí--Lola Beltran, Lucha Villa, Amalia Mendoza (la Tariácuri) and later, Yolanda del Río. Chavela Vargas sienda la reina...
Y por supuesto, las hermanas--sister duos like Las Hermanas Padilla and Las Jilguerillas (download), Las Hermanas Huerta (wonderful) and others. Be sure to listen to las Hermanas Huertas'  version of the song, Atotonilco.
And then more recent (and contemporary) artists like Lila Downs and Linda Ronstadt. Each with fascinating stories--Lila Downs comes in part from raíces zapotecas oaxaqueñas. And Linda Ronstadt, her Anglo surname notwithstanding, grew up in a Mexican family de este lado. Her landmark album, Canciones de mi padre (1987) was a huge success--and put the kinds of songs we're doing into the American listening mainstream. (A story worth looking into!) So, take up what you find most compelling, follow your own lead... Todas buenas...

Some of the film/video clips show faces of the audience--these moments are telling. ¡Qué se den cuenta!

Note on YouTube: occasionally songs are removed for copyright reasons. Someone invariably posts them again--so simply make a new search, with artist + song title. Often the icon image will tell you whether you have the same version. As for ads--well, mute them out--or download the songs onto your own music hard drive (audio or video) to eliminate.

Week 11: SIN TÍ--Trío Los Panchos

Trío Los Panchos

TRÍO LOS PANCHOS / SIN TÍ

DOWNLOAD: No  separate Trío Los Panchos download. Listen to the YouTube versions instead, links below.

READING: "La vida es un sueño," by Ry Cooder (from his book, Los Angeles Stories), attached as pdf.

The setting is Los Angeles, the year 1950. A beautiful rendition of "place" at a specific moment in  time--vis a vis a song... Ry Cooder is best known as a musician, but here he's made himself into a (very good!) short story writer, in the the LA noir tradition. I'll be curious what you think...!  As you'll see, the main character is a "trío man"--and the song that weaves through is--of course--Sin tí...

Read carefully (there's lots of good detail) and make the leap (in your project) from Ry Cooder's story to the world of Trío Los Panchos...

MÚSICA:
Trío Los Panchos ON FILM:  (cantan Sin tí y  Perdida). These two filmed versions will tell you a lot about Trío Los panchos, and their music:

TRÍO LOS PANCHOS - CIELITO LINDO - YouTube  (!!!)

And to close, the song from which Ry Cooder took his title. First, the original (and priceless) version by Aresenio Rodriguéz (de Cuba), and  a beautiful versión de México... Lupe y Raul.

La Vida Es Un Sueño - Arsenio Rodriguez Y Su Conjunto - YouTube
LUPE Y RAUL - LA VIDA ES UN SUEÑO - YouTube

-Fernando Fernandez-Los Panchitos-Trio Martino- -La Vida es un Sueño- - YouTube

_________

Not part of this week's project, but good to know about: For Ry Cooder's music, follow up with his own recordings, and of course his production of Buena Vista Social Club (in Havana).  There's also his more recent album centered on the story of LA's Chavez Ravine--portrayed in music. Many more of his songs/versions are on YouTube... Here are just a few:
Ry Cooder - Goodnight Irene - YouTube
Ry Cooder with John Lee Hooker - YouTube
Ry Cooder and David Lindley - Jesus On The Mainline - YouTube
Ry Cooder Cancion Mixteca - YouTube, a version I quite recommend!

Week 10: FAROLITO--Agustín Lara

Agustín Lara

Many good things touched on last night--with perhaps too many diversions (the Leningrad Cowboys singing Katyusha with the Red Army Choir in botas picudas) and not enough concentration. And we needed more songs. Nevertheless, a pleasure to be with you...  Tony
_____________

FAROLITO / CALLE / PUERTA

Agustin Lara is a phenomenon--certainly one of Mexico's greatest song writers and performers--and the stories about him are legion. Some of them are even true! Lara (originally from Vera Cruz, according to one version), led a mysterious and adventurous life--in all senses--reflected year-by-year in his songs. Farolito might be the best known, but listen as well to Mujer, and María Bonita (written for María Félix) and Imposible (his very first)... They're all good--and all completely different from the ranchera tradition we've been following. This is another side--otra cara--de México! I'll give you a good selection (from a double cd) which you can edit down into your favorites as a playlist. Contrast with José Alfredo. And what would Don Octavio have to say?

PROJECT: Look into Agustin Lara's life--all the stories--and build your project around them--and la canción romántica in your own life...  Let FAROLITO be your guide...

DOWNLOAD:  http://rapidshare.com/files/3168339029/S%26P%20Mexico%20Agustin%20Lara.zip

READING: For those who can handle the Spanish, I'll include Yolanda Moreno Rivas' chapter (attached as pdf). READ CAREFULLY. It has good photos, too. Please come to class ready to share the stories with your non-Spanish reading classmates. For our English readers--you can find a lot on line.

VIDEOS: The first two are audio--his original versions. The second two are from films.
AGUSTIN LARA - FAROLITO (PRIMERA VERSION) - YouTube
AGUSTIN LARA - IMPOSIBLE - YouTube

AGUSTÍN LARA - María Bonita - YouTube  FILM. Agustin Lara at the piano--filmed live. There are a few other videos like this, on YouTube if you search carefully.

FILM Bandoneon Tango y el Bolero "Pecadora" Libertad Lamarque - YouTube  Watch Agustin Lara presenting Libertad Lamarque here in the first minute of the video; he then accompanies her as she sings. (Libertad Lamarque was originally from Argentina, but she became very popular in Mexico (where she lived in exile) especially in film. 1930s and '40s. Look for Pedro Infante and Libertad Lamarque together in the film, Ansiedad! It has a wonderful version of Farolito.)

Week 9: TROVADOR / FUENTE / CENOTE

Guty Cárdenas

Beautiful class, you guys--have a beautiful break!
I hope you enjoy the Guty Cárdenas download over spring break--his songs quedan muy lindas...

VS 185X S&P: México: Week 8: TROVADOR / FUENTE / CENOTE

So far, most of the songs we've done have related to central México--Chavela, José Alfredo, las ranchéras y las canciones del Bajío (La borrachita, Adíos mi chaparrita). Now we go to a very different tradition, la canción romántica. Our first stop will be in Yucatan--la Trova Yucateca--the Toubadour songs of Yucatan. No surprise (the word trova)--since the medieval troubadours of southern France (Provencal) were already distinguished for their lyric poems on themes of love, a tradition they basically invented. "Courtly love," at the time--the patrons of these poems were the court nobility, with their distinct social ethos. Nevertheless, a popular dimension also emerged in the image of "el trovador y su juglar" --the troubadour and his minstrel--which remains to this day a longstanding and mysterious delight (see contemporary re-enactments on YouTube).

In México, the re-flowering of this image, quite fittingly, found a place in Yucatan. Why? In part climate, in part ethos, and also proximity to Cuba and hence to Spain (Cuban musical tradition combines both Spanish and the African sources). La Trova Yucateca's golden age centered in Mérida, and among the best known of the tovadores was Guty Cárdenas. A beautiful, engaging, and ultimately sad story- Guty Cárdenas had a tragic end at barely 26--just as the golden age of la trova yucateca itself lasted only through the 1920s. You can read about this in a chapter from Yolanda Moreno Rivas (pdf, in Spanish, attached). It's from her masterful book, La historia de la música popular mexicana.

For those whose Spanish is good, read this chapter carefully--it's a very good example of the strengths of this kind of writing at its best. (For those who don't, make do as you can with online sources in English--the tradition is worth  exploring.) (By the way, the book itself is on reserve for you in the CED Library.)

Names & términos:
trova / trovador
Alma Reed (American journalist who lived there, and who was courted by Don Felipe)
Peregrina  (canción de Ricardo Palemerín), letra de un poema de Luís Rosada Vega on the theme of their romance. (see YMR)
Poetas / trovadores / y músicos juntos-- Poets and the musicians working together... lo essencial de la Trova yucateca
Ritmos: Bambuco (colombiano), Bolero (cubano), y Clave. Yolanda Morena Rivas writes clearly about all this. You can follow her guide with your own YouTube searches. See what you can find, using her book (published in 1979) as a start.

CANCIONES (las dos en el cancionario--we'll sing them!)
Ojos Tristes (Guty Cárdenas)  Guty Cárdenas es un verdadero tesoro.
Nunca (Guty Cárdenas)

READING:

Week 8: MILPA / MAIZ -- MAGUEY / PULQUE -- SON‏ / Continuar y llenar

Mayan glyphs, Madrid Codex

That was a wonderful evening, last night.

There were a number of missing teeth. Some of you wrote me ahead of time, others not. In any case, I'm of course sympathetic to the demands of your course load--but we meet just once a week, and there's no way outside of class to make up for what happens in Room 170. You need to be there. Enough said?

CHANGE IN PLAN. After sleeping on it, I think it's really important that we continue with the current Week 7 theme: MAIZ/MILPA -- MAGUEY/PULQUE -- SON.  For one thing, you all need more time to engage yourselves with the full range of material I sent you.
I want you to consider more thoroughly the distinction between "country" songs (sones, del campo) and the popular songs that reflect the move to the city--and the loss of rural tradition--which in fact is the subject of those later popular songs! (Cuatro milpas is a good example, likewise El destrerrado....and of course Mi chaparrita and La borrachita...) You can also think about the elements that come from Europe--vs. the elements that are autochthonous--that is, mesoamericano...and how these can be seen/heard/undrestood in the songs themselves.
So, listen to the new DOWNLOADS (Cuarteto Coculense 1908-09 and the contemporary versions by Los Cenzontes).

Also, I want everyone to view the 4 YouTube videos that Valdemar found for us. They're on his Notebook site, with Valdemar's insightful introduction. They present the view "from the country" (quite beautifully):
http://lasquerencias.blogspot.com/?m=0 (Go to Marzo 2013,"About maíz and milpa")

from Gnu'u nuni / Las palabras del maíz
And I want you to work on that "difficult" song--Cuatro Milpas. I will forward you the lyrics separately (in the Davíd Zaizar version) so that you can listen and learn the timing. It's not really that hard--just listen patiently and sing each line. And pay attention to the intonation (where the notes hit in the scale). DAVID ZAIZAR CUATRO MILPAS - YouTube

Also, let's learn "El Desterrado" Hnos. Zaizar - YouTube. It's a great GROUP song. You'll see...

So, your "assignment" is to do some (more) beautiful work on the theme we began in Week 7. To carry it further!!!

___

Note that March 21, next week, will be the last class before Spring Break. We'll wait till next Thursday to take up la canción romantica--I'll introduce Guty Cardenas and Trova yucateca en la proxima!

Tony

Week 7: MILPA / MAIZ -- MAGUEY / PULQUE -- SON‏

MILPA / MAIZ -- MAGUEY / PULQUE -- SON

This is at the least a two-week project, but I want to get it all "on the table" for you to consider.  We'll start now, return to the material later in the semester. These pairs of terms can be seen as central to la cultura mexicana. That is, they offer ways to locate (place!) what it means to be from México. What I want you do is get into this material--the exploration, as always, is open. I've juxtaposed reading with current videos and songs--because they each reflect the theme in different ways. You'll need to make the synthesis in your projects. Let the visual be your guide!

(Note that we'll then move on to la canción romántica--la trova yucateca, Agustin Lara, los tríos--an entirely different tradition--with a different feel, and very different sources. More "urbane." Ry Cooder's story, La vida es un sueño (set in LA) will figure in this. And after, return to "el centro de México..." (Remind me about the film, Paris, Texas...and Ry Cooder's role in making its soundtrack...and why I showed it to you last night.)

READING: Octavio Paz, Conquista y colonia (keep referring to Don Octavio--his ideas are central to what we're doing).
The new reading (below) will get you into Frances Toor. Remember, her observations come from the 1930s--that's crucial to why we're reading her book. I've paired her chapters with YouTube videos. Something I suggest you explore as well:

Frances Toor:
Toor: Description of the Virgen de Guadalupe pps. 172-178
fiesta tradiccional de la virgen de guadalupe - YouTube (we watched some of this one this together in class)

Toor: Description of the Señor de Chalma (pps. 178-184)
Peregrinación al Santuario del Señor de Chalma (Ocoyoacac, Estado de México) - YouTube
chalma, 1 - YouTube
Mariachi Coculense de Cirilo Marmolejo El Santo Señor de Chalma - YouTube  (treated in song)
Note: I remember reading this chapter from Frances Toor some time back, and forming my own mental image of these pilgrimages. Which made it all the more fascinating to find contemporary video versions. So--now we can "see" what she's describing--but what we see includes many elements from a very different world--that is, our own...

Toor: Description of the harvest of maguey and the making of pulque p. 15-18
Some of the videos below are better than others, but they'll get you started. Compare the "home videos" with "professional documentary" productions. How do they differ in what they each reveal?
MAGUEY-- LA COSECHA - YouTube
MIEL DE MAGUEY Y LOS TLACHIQUEROS - YouTube
Elaboración del pulque - YouTube
El Pulque... - YouTube
ciudad de mexico en la pulqueria - YouTube (follow this one with Chava Flores)

Chava Flores Los Pulques De Apan - YouTube  (Chava Flores--D.F. puro--with his own take on la pulqueria...

Look into the word word MILPA. The videos (from today) give a hint of this:
Milpa de Arnulfo.wmv - YouTube  (note that this is a video from la serviette mission project)
Cultivo de Maiz - YouTube

Then consider these popular songs (composed songs, studio recordings, not folkloric material). Al mismo tiempo, they're beautiful, and reflect the same cultural world:

Cuatro milpas
DAVID ZAIZAR CUATRO MILPAS - YouTube
CUATRO MILPAS: Antonio Bribiesca (La Guitarra Mexicana) - YouTube (with good visuals)
Cuatro Milpas-Las Jilguerillas - YouTube  (versión mas bien norteña! Siempre con su propia energía...)

El desterrado
"El Desterrado" Hnos. Zaizar - YouTube  (consider the theme here...)

Juan Charrasqueado ("en una choza muy humilde") This one for the way the words themselves form a backdrop. Milpa, choza, pedregal...
CHAVELA VARGAS | Juan Charrasqueado - YouTube

_____

Interesting to compare how the notion of figura plays out in the world of flamenco (estamos en andalucía, españa, por supuesto):
silverio franconetti en carmona - YouTube

Week 6: RAIZ / Pila del Bautismo‏

Pila del bautismo

Wonderful last night--your projects, and the stories you shared (even when difficult). Ideas y sentimientos importantes--una revelación... Gracias a todos! Tony
_____

READING: Octavio Paz, Conquista y colonia. And how they came to accommodate Spanish rule (including the Church). Note what Don Octavio has to say about the "complete world" imposed by Spain. What it provided. And how he counters the chamula texts ("indigenous" renderings of scripture) which in effect show us how los pueblos originarios accomplished this accommodation (p. 117 in the Spanish edition, pps. 106-107 in the translation).

Consider what Paz says about the "abandonment" of the Gods... and why the Virgen de Guadalupe  (Tonantzin, the female deity, "la madre del maíz") emerged in their place... How her figure became a meeting point of the two worlds... (You'll need to review la Malinche chapter as well--his discussion of la madre...)

PROJECT: For this week: imagine yourself as of them--one of these peoples, pueblos originarios--in the terms described by Don Octavio. How do you find a place in "this new world?" Look at images of early baptismal fonts in México--how they represent the two worlds...

MUSICA: Continue with José Alfredo and Cuco Sanchez. (Their songs warrant a careful listening.) How do they cast this question in personal terms? (And at a distance of 450 years...) How is this question part of your own world?

And here's a selection of YouTube vidoes. There's a lot, all related to the new theme--so pick and chose which to draw on. We'll lopok at Las Mañanitas (the Pedro Infante film) together in class.

Pedro Infante "Fallaste Corazon" - YouTube   Two film versions.
FALLASTE CORAZON CUCO SANCHEZ - YouTube
_________

ADIÓS MI CHAPARRITA-Alfredo Picazo - YouTube
LA BORRACHITA - Alfredo Picazo - YouTube

Las mañanitas con Pedro Infante. - YouTube  (la pila del bautismo, see lyrics below, verse 4)
El Rapto 8 /12 PELICULA - YouTube Jorge Negrete's version, filmed earlier, by way of comparison.

DAVID ZAIZAR INDITA MIA - YouTube  Y quien es esta indita?

Ruben Fuentes 78 RPM "La negra" son jalisciense - YouTube  The popular composer/arranger Ruben Fuentes working from a traditional son--this an early version of the popularization of la música verdaderamente folklórica. More on this next week.

And some "ethnographic" home videos (I showed parts in class). That is, real places, real-time from today... El pasado hecho presente? O....?

Both of these reflect the French "Intervention" in México in the 1860s--and present two reactions.

CRóNICA10 - YouTube  sitio local  THIS ONE BEST.

Y placer a felicitarte

El dia en que tu naciste
Nacieron todas las flores
Y en la plia del bautismo
Cantaron los ruisenores

Ya viene amaneciendo
Ya la luz del dia nos vio
Levantate de manana
Mira que ya amanecio

Week 5: VOZ (Arrieros somos)

José Clemente Orozco: Cortés y la Malinche (detalle)

Good work last night--and a good discussion.

VOZ (ARRIEROS SOMOS)

New RAPIDSHARE downloads. I will send you a suggested playlist for these in a separate email:
José Alfredo Jiménez:  http://rapidshare.com/files/1144395461/S%26P%20Mexico%20Jose%20Alfredo%20Jimenez%20.zip
Cuco Sánchez:  http://rapidshare.com/files/1918178467/S%26P%20Mexico%20Cuco%20Sanchez.zip
Listen to José Alfredo singing his own songs (so far we've been listening to Chavela's versions)--how you understand them. Then listen to Cuco Sánchez in the same way. Qué es la diferencia entre los dos--as an example of VOZ.  In other words what's each writer's view of the world? How do the songs speak to us of this? That's my primary question for you. (Para ellos que hablen castellano, se puede pensar en terminos de varias canciones--for those who's Spanish isn't as flexible, I suggest you compare some that we've been doing). For everyone, listen carefully to Yo, from 1951--from the very beginning of José Alfredo's career.

Ella or Que Te Vaya Bonita
with
Arrieros Someos and/or Fallaste Corazon.
La Cama de Piedra is also great--but it began as an anonymous song, later arranged by  Cuco Sánchez. In this it represents a world view of his choosing rather than his own making...

Consider how BOTH sets of songs relate to what Octavio Paz has to say. The ideas back and forth (between song lyrics and the book) are quite provocative. They have everything to do with "el ser mexicano." I want you to explore this in your projects.

Note on VOZ. As we discussed, the word has MANY meanings. One I want you to keep in mind in particular is voice in the sense of "a poet's voice." That is, how the persona is reflected in what one writes. Make the crossover here from writing to artwork--painting, drawing, constructed montage--and yes, we're in Room 170 next Thursday evening!

Note on Arrieros Somos. We listened carefully--and then began singing it ourselves. Por lo menos intentabamos cantarla... (continue with this on your own!) Now I want you to consider what it SAYS. The song is profound--and at the same time quite subtle in its shifts from line to line. Consider again how this song relates to the ideas of Don Octavio.
For images: try googling <arrieros mexico> and you'll find some good historical images. I don't mean to tie you to history--the images are a point of departure--but they're important in that they'll give you a sense of why the figure of "el arriero" is so important in Mexican culture (and all through the Spanish speaking world). Cuco Sanchez took this figure (in a metaphorical sense) and wrote the song...
Compare what Frances Toor has to say (p. 362-363).

A reprise of what we watched/listened to last night:

Best of all: Chavela Vargas (in her early version):  Chavela Vargas Arrieros Somos - YouTube

Arrieros somos, Cuco Sanchez (also in his early version):  cuco sanchez arrieros somos - YouTube
The later version by Cuco Sánchez (more about form?): CUCO SÁNCHEZ - ARRIEROS SOMOS - YouTube

LA PRIETA LINDA Y LOS HERMANOS ZAIZAR, ARRIEROS SOMOS - YouTube  Remember that Los hermanos Zaizar add a lot here. This version is also less "del corazón"--and  more about form. Consider. It's a subtle distinction which has bearing on your own work...

Week 4: FIESTA / TRISTEZA‏

Fiesta de Guadalupe

Bueno. Good class last night... I like the way you're involved with each other's work. And many of the projects lo merecen... You're being thoughtful in what you're doing.

Week 4: FIESTA / TRISTEZA

La fiesta--y su opuesto. The fiesta and it's opposite. (It's counter-image--la cara oscura...) The dark side of the moon... I want you to consider both. Don Octavio offers several possibilities.  (Read carefully Chapter 3, Todos Santos, Día de Muertos.)

fiesta/pobreza   fiesta/muerte   fiesta/duelo   fiesta/tristeza  (just for starters)

Make it the subject of your project for the week, and add your thoughts on this to your online notebook, with your images. I chose TRISTEZA not because I want you to be sad, but because it's such a crucial words in the songs. In a sense, it offers a bridge between the notion of MASCARA and that of FIESTA. Consider again the letra for Ella. Why does José Alfredo take on the persona that he does? And listen to Arrieros Somos (by Cuco Sánchez).  Remember, I'm not thinking literally here--but rather, at the worlds behind the words...

Ella - Chavela Vargas - YouTube  ("ellas quiso quedarse cuando vío mi tristeza"--we listened to this last night...). Compare José Alfredo's own version:
Jose Alfredo Jimenez - Ella - YouTube

Think of FIESTA in relation to place. This is a good week to open up Frances Toor's book. Look at (browse) Section Two, Society / Custom / Fiesta. She describes Mexican fiestas relative to calendar year AND place. These descriptions, remember, come from her own experience in México in the 1930s and 40s--they're invaluable. I don't expect you to read all of this at one go--use it more as a geographical encyclopedia of sources. We'll return to this book numerous times this semester.

Here's another song to consider for the word tristeza. Arrieros somos, by Cuco Sánchez. Chavela sings a beautiful version, on your download. And La  Prieta Linda offers a good contrast. Listen up so we can sing it together...

CUCO SÁNCHEZ - ARRIEROS SOMOS - YouTube  (la canción es de Cuco Sánchez)
LA PRIETA LINDA Y LOS HERMANOS ZAIZAR, ARRIEROS SOMOS - YouTube
Chavela Vargas version. You have the file on your music download (I didn't find it on YouTube)

We'll continue with the Arrieros theme in the week following...

Week 3: MASCARAS / Octavio Paz‏

Hola a todos...!

Good class, even if our review got too long. The comments sheets were good--they got you thinking--and responding to what everyone made--and that came out in the discussion. We'll find diplomatic (but effective!) ways to keep moving...

The new theme is Máscaras (Octavio Paz uses words like simular/disimular--y disfrazar). See if you find ways to make the theme personal--and connect it with place and memory--memoria y lugar...

I'm writing this quickly on Friday afternoon. PLEASE BE SURE TO SEND ME YOUR URL to online notebook by SUNDAY. Voy a mirar/leer con interés. When I have everyone's I will send you an email with links.

Here are the YouTubes we watched last night--anoche.

PEDRO INFANTE--CUCURRUCUCU PALOMA - YouTube

Caetano Veloso Cucurrucucu Paloma (Hable Con Ella) - YouTube
Lola Beltrán - Cucurrucucú Paloma - YouTube (you may be able to find one with better sound--pero sí es tipa bravía!

Week 2: ANHELO

from Yolanda Moreno Rivas: Historia de la música popular mexicana

Anhelo. A beautiful word, with many meanings. Que fijense en "la etomolgía". The songs are filled with these feelings--Chavela being the master. Aun en la voz misma. And as Octavio Paz  writes, people from Mexico have them no small quantity--but also hide them in ways that are particular to Mexico. Hence the title of Chapter Two: Máscaras. Which is what we'll explore this week. Can one get through the mask to the feelings. Or is the mask--the surface--what we must live with to protect them?  (Consider Paz's use of the word no "rajarse"--translated by Lysander Kemp as "not step back" or "not to crack..." As in "Ay, Jalisco, no te rajes...")

Some comments on your projects (which I thought were a very good beginning).

Do:  Beautiful and precise drawing, accurate as to both meaning and feeling. Keep it up.
Everto: We ran out of time, but the combo of your "foto con libros" and the exploding digital map seemed to cover two ends of a spectrum!
Gigie: the dry colors, the mysterious--older--face peering through, set in a land so abstract as to be almost unknown (unknowable?). A ver...
Buen concepto. Next--más de la mano...
Andremar: Los dos lados, nos sorprendiste bien--the two sides brought out contradiction in how we find these feelings bien adentro--inside...
Lucia: Beautiful work, corazon de madera, que pesa, el olor, tocado con las manos...and connection via the poem to Queretaro (=querer?)
Vreni: Vos--bruja bonita, the mystery de como una obra-una vida misma-se desarrolla--hence the inevitable complexities...
Peony: Well stated--la tipa fuerte, poderosa--and the difficulty of the dustbowl landscape present behind her. To explore more...
Alejando: The cine pantalla (screen) becomes a kind of mascara--but the size and presence of image you gave us also reveal... Consider!
Diana Carolina: a ver la proxima--algo bien hecho a mano...
Mike: Good black and white. Remember about going with the view "que tiene mas fuerza--mejor entendido adentro..." Good bull, dude..
Brooke: A mysterious, forthright young woman at clothesline. American frontier, with the "clothing" extending across into... Many possibilities!
Ariel: Beautiful beginning. El corazón mismo, la linea de conección. You put a lot of yourself into the work--that's wonderful. Adelante!
Taylor. Just go for beauty and strength in your work. Listen to the songs, get Eliza to help you with lyrics. Paint.
Eliza. A flower on the coast del Pacífico. There's something in that. we'll see where it goes... Yes, use what you know...feel...
Naomi ???
Valdemar.

People mentioned, listened to, looked at (you can remind me of the rest!):

Diego del Gastor (guitarra flamenca, Morón de la Frontera) y La Fernanda (cantaora de Utrera).
Manuel Álvarez Bravo, his truly great photos
Pablo Neruda: emsimismarse and the long coast of Chile--mirando al mar  (Freud: Oceanic feeling)
José Clemente Orozco: pintor mexicano (the murals) Cortez y la malinche... Meaning in FORM as well as in idea...
El venadito-- Dueto Caleta y Duo America (both on youtube).

Keep it up, everone! Next time--better organization of time on my part. Y mas canciones!!!!!   A ver....!

Tony

PS. New people: purchase Octavio Paz inmediamente--read first two chapters. Use as background. Ask me for handouts in next class. Cec's will be available in class, from my printed list. I will send you basics by email.

Week I: TIERRA Y CORAZON

Tlachiquero

Saludos a todos!

Good group, enjoyable evening.
I was a bit thrown at the beginning because of earlier technical snafus, that's why I wasn't able to have room prepared as I like. Set up for visuals, etc. But as the eving moved along, the casual atmosphere, I think, was good!

MÚSICA: Here are the first two downloads:

Chavel Vargas, Sentimiento de México (Vols. I-II)
http://rapidshare.com/files/2778694755/Chavela%20Vargas%20Sentimiento%20de%20Mexico%20I-II.zip

Antonio Bribiesca: La  guitarra que llora (I-II)
http://rapidshare.com/files/3087250003/S%26P%20Mexico%20Antonio%20Bribiesca.zip

Nuestra "biblia." For right now, you can find any of the other songs in the cancionero on you tube (use the interpreters I've listed.)  I'll put together an S&P: México playlist soon. For this week, internalize Chavela y Antonio!

READING: Buy your two books at Ned's. Read first chapter in Octavio Paz (El pachuco y otros extremos--The Pachuco and other extremes). As you read, make note of points and questions that interest you personally. They'll become part of your on-line notebook as we go along. If Ned's runs out, the Octavio Paz book is easily available locally (Moe's, Pegasus, etc.) or on reserve in CED Library. With the Frances Toor book--begin your browse. Her ethnographic map at the beginning showing indigenous language groups will be of interest throughout the course. Internalize it, too! If Ned's runs out, order ASAP on line (they're inexpensive.)

TIERRA y CORAZÓN
I want you to think of this project as a way of showing us your connection with a particular place in México--pueblo, ciudad, región--una valle, una colima, un lago) algún lugar que conozcas, o que quieres conocer. Either a place that you know (from your own experience, from memory, or from story)--or one from the imagination--that is, one you'd like to know. Make it specific in terms of the feel of the place (that goes beyond it's "look" and has to do with all the senses, and how they become a part of us...

Remember, all media are acceptable, but I want you to show us what you can do visually. It's an introduction, and level of ambition is part of the commitment. (The mark of any good artist, although showing sometimes in subtle ways.) De todo esto hablamos en la próxima!

Also-- DO SEND ME CONFIRMATION FOR CLASS. To do this, take a cell phone self-portrait with you holding the two books and email it to me at chambersstreet, as above.  I'll have cec's for you next week.

These weblogs below show each of the student's projects. The "cuaderno electrónico" idea was that everyone keep a week-by-week record of the things they made, together with notes on the reading and Thursday evening discussions in class. This worked better for some than for others--writing is an acquired habit--but the notebooks gave everyone a place to continue the discussion--and to record their own thoughts as the course developed.

2. Arrieros Somos
José Alfredo Jiménez

Arrieros somos
y en el camino andamos
y cada quién
tendrá su merecido.

Ya lo verás
que al fín de tu camino,
renegarás
hasta de haber nacido.

Si todo el mundo
venimos de la nada
y a la nada...
por Dios que volveremos.

Me río del mundo
que al fín ni el es eterno.
Por esta vida...
nomás.. nomas pasamos.

Tú me pediste
amor...y yo te quise.
Tú me pediste
la vida...y te la dí.

Si al fín de cuentas
te vas...pués anda y vete...
que la tristeza te lleve...
igual que a mí...

3. Albur de Amor
Alfonso Esparza Otéo

Yo como creido
me equivoqué
triste es mi vida,
joven querida
este albur
yo lo jugué

y todavía
valor me sobra,
hasta donde pude aposte
si me matan a balazos
que me maten
y al cabo y qué .

Albur de amor me gustó
yo lo jugué
como era pobre
yo mi vida
la hipotequé
y todavía
valor me sobra,
hasta donde pude aposte
si me matan a balazos
que me maten
y al cabo y qué .

Albur de amor me gustó
yo lo jugué
como era pobre
yo mi vida
la hipotequé
y todavía
valor me sobra,
hasta donde pude aposte
si me matan a balazos
que me maten
y al cabo y qué.

4. Cartas Marcadas

Solo cartas marcadas has de ver,

5. Cruz de olvido
Juan Zaízar  (canta Chavela Vargas)

Con el atardecer
me iré de ti
me iré sin ti
me alejaré de tí
con un dolor
dentro de mi
te juro corazón
que no es falta de amor
pero es mejor así
un día comprenderás
que lo hice por tu bien
que todo fue por tí...

La barca en que me iré
lleva una cruz de olvido
lleva una cruz de amor
y en esa cruz sin ti
me moriré de hastío  (2X)

Culpable no he de ser
de que por mi
puedas llorar
mejor será partir
prefiero así
que hacerte mal
yo sé que sufriré
mi nave cruzará
un mar de soledad..
Adiós, adiós amor
recuerda que te amé
que siempre te amaré..

La nave en que me iré
lleva una cruz de olvido
lleva una cruz de amor
y en esa cruz sin ti
me moriré de hastío?

6. Ella
José Alfredo Jimenez
(Chavela Vargas canta)

7. Farolito

Agustin Lara

Farolito que alumbras apenas

mi calle desierta

cuantas noches me viste llorando

lamar a su puerta.

Sin llevarle mas que una cancion,

un pedazo de mi corazon

sin llevarle mas nada que un beso

friolento, travieso, amargo y dulzon.

8. Sin ti
Los Panchos (Chucho Navarro)

Sin ti
No podré vivir jamás
Y pensar que nunca más
Estarás junto a mi
Sin ti
Que me puede ya importar
Si lo que me hace llorar
Está lejos de aquí
Sin ti
No hay clemencia en mi dolor
La esperanza de mi amor
Te la llevas al fin
Sin ti
Es inútil vivir
Como inútil será
El quererte olvidar

9. Perdida
Los Panchos (Chucho Navarro)

Perdida
te ha llamado la gente
sin saber que has sufrido
con desesperacion

Vencida
quedaste tu en la vida
por no tener cariño
que te diera ilusion

Perdida
por que al fango rodaste
despues que destrozaron
tu virtud y tu honor

No importa que te llamen perdida
yo le daría a tu vida    (???)
que destrozo el engaño
la verdad de mi amor

10. Ojos Tristes
Guty Cardenas

Tienen tus ojos un raro encanto
tus ojos triste como de niño,
que no han sentido ningun cariño
tus ojos tristes como de santo.

Ay, si no fuera a pedirte tanto
yo te pediria vivir de hinojos.
mirando siempre tus tristes
ojos que tienen, ojos que tienen,
sabor de llanto..

ojos que tienen, ojos que tienen,
sabor de llanto..

11. Nunca
Guty Cardenas / Letra: Ricardo López Mendez
ritmo: clave

Yo sé que nunca,
besaré tu boca,
tu boca de púrpura encendida;

aunque nunca besar, pueda tu boca,
aunque nunca besar pueda tu boca.

Cuantas cosas quedaron prendidas
hasta dentro del fondo de mi alma
cuantas luces dejaste encendidas

Cuantas cosas quedaron prendidas
hasta dentro del fondo de mi alma
cuantas luces dejaste encendidas
yo no se como voy a apagarlas

ojala...que te vaya...múy bonito...

13. Volver Volver
F. Maldonado / Chavela Vargas canta

Este amor apasionado
anda todo alborotado por volver.
Voy camino a la locura
y aunque todo me tortura, sé querer.

Nos dejamos hace tiempo
pero me llegó el momento de perder.
Tú tenías mucha razón;
Le hago caso al corazón
Y me muero por volver.

Y volver volver volver
a tus brazos otra vez;
Llegaré hasta donde estés;
Yo sé perder, yo sé perder;
Quiero volver, volver, volver.
(repite)

14. Cucurrucucú Paloma
Tomás Méndez

Dicen que por las noches
no más se le iba en puro llorar;

con sus puertitas de par en par;

cucurrucucú no llores.
Las piedras jamás, paloma,
¿qué van a saber de amores?
Cucurrucucú, cucurrucucú,
Cucurrucucú, cucurrucucú,
cucurrucucú, paloma, ya no le llores

15. El venadito
tradicional

Soy un pobre venadito
que habito en la serranía.
Soy un pobre venadiro
que habito en la serranía.
Como no soy tan mansito,
no bajo al agua de día,
de noche, poco a poquito,
en tus brazos vida mía.

Me subí al cerro mas alto
para devisar los planes.
Donde riscan aguilillas
No mandan los gavilanes,
ni las naguas amarillas,
aunque se pongan olanes

Quisiera perla fina de tus lúcidos aretes
pa' morderte la orejita
y besarte los cachetes
Quien te manda a ser bonita
que hasta a mí me comprometes.

Tengo un nicho de cristal,
hecho con mis propios manos,
para colocarte a tí.
si seguimos como vamos;
pero si me pagas mal,
pobre nicho, lo quebramos.

Voy hacer una barata
y una gran realización;
las viejitas a cuartilla,
las muchachas a tostón,
los yernos a seis centavos
y a las suegras de pilón.

Ya con esto me despido;
pero pronto doy la vuelta.
No más que libre Díos
de una niña mosca muerta,
de esas de "¡ Ay, no, no, por Dios!"
y hasta salen a la puerta

Le dije a una muy bonita
que si me lavaba el paño
le dije a una muy bonita
que si me lavaba el paño

Me contesto la maldita si...
usted quiere hasta lo baño
nomas vengase temprano
porque tarde le hace daño
(Valentin Elizalde)

Ya tengo visto el nopal
donde he de cortar la tuna
ya tengo visto el nopal
donde he de cortar la tuna

Como soy hombre formal no....
me gusta tener una
me gusta tener de a dos
por si se me enoja alguna

16. La Feria de las Flores
Letra y música de Chucho Monge    E

Me gusta cantarle al viento
porque vuelan mis cantares
y digo lo que yo siento
en toditos los lugares.

Aquí vine porque vine
a la Feria de las Flores;
no hay cerro que se me empine
ni cuaco que se me atore.

En mi caballo retinto
he venido de muy lejos,
y traigo pistola al cinto
y con ella doy consejos.

Atravesé la montaña
"pa" venir a ver las flores;
aquí hay una rosa huraña
que es la flor de mis amores.

Y aunque otro "quera" cortarla,
yo la "devisé" primero,
y juro que he de robarla
aunque tenga jardinero.

Yo la he de ver trasplantada
en el huerto de mi casa,
y si sale el jardinero,
"pos" a ver... a ver qué pasa.

17. Juan Charrasqueado
Victor Cordero
Corrido

18. La Cama de Piedra
Cuco Sanchez (arreglo)

De piedra ha de ser la cama
de piedra la cabecera
la mujer que a mi me quiera
me ha de querer de a de veras
ay, ay, corazón por que no amas

Subí a la sala del crimen
le pregunté al presidente
que si es delito el quererte
que me sentencien a muerte
ay, ay, corazón por que no amas

El día que a mi me matan
que sea de cinco balazos
y estar cerquita de ti
para morir en tus brazos
ay, ay, corazón por que no amas

Por caja quiero un sarape
por cruz mis dobles cananas
y escriban sobre mi tumba
mi último adiós con mil balas
ay, ay, corazón por que no ama

19. Fallaste Corazon
Cuco Sanchez

Y tú que te creías
el rey de todo el mundo;
y tú que nunca fuiste
capaz de perdonar
y cruel y despiadado
de todo te reías,
hoy imploras cariño
aunque sea por piedad.

A dónde está tu orgullo,
a dónde está el coraje,
por que hoy que estás vencido
mendigas caridad.
Ya ves que no es lo mismo
amar que ser amado,
hoy que estás acabado
¡qué lástima me das!

Maldito corazón
me alegro que ahora sufras,
que llores y te humilles
ante este gran amor.
La vida es la ruleta
en que apostamos todos
y a ti te había tocado
nomás la de ganar,
Pero hoy tu buena suerte
la espalda te ha volteado,
Fallaste corazón
no vuelvas a apostar.

20. La borrachita
Ignacio Fernández Esperón (Tata Nacho)

Borrachita, me voy, para olvidarle,
le “quero” mucho,
y él también me “quere”.
Borrachita me voy,
hasta la capital...
¡ay!, pa’ servir al patrón
que me mandó llamar anteayer.
Yo le quise traer,
dijo que no,
que si había de llorar,
pa’ que volver.
Borrachita, me voy,
hasta la capital...
¡ay!, pa’ servir al patrón
que me mandó llamar anteayer.

21. Adiós, mi chaparritaIgnacio Fernández Esperón (Tata Nacho)

Adiós, mi chaparrita,
no llores por tu Pancho
que si se va del rancho
muy pronto volverá.

Volverás que del Bajío
te traigo cosas “güenas”,
y un beso, que tus penas
muy pronto olvidarás.

Los moñitos pa’ tus trenzas
y pa´ tu mamacita
rebozos de bolitas
y sus “naguas” de percal.

¡Ay! ¡ca-ray...! ¡Ay ca-ray!

No llores chula mía
porque me voy “tristiando”
y quiero irme cantando,
que el llanto me hace mal.

Alegres siempre fuimos,
y cuando vuelva quiero,
recibas tu ranchero
sonriendo como el sol.

Y digas que al marcharse
por lejos que se fuera
llevaba a su ranchera
prendida al corazón.

¡Ay! ¡que caray...!...

moreno y alto, moreno y alto.

24. Las mañanitas
versión de Pedro Infante

Estas son las mañanitas
que cantaba el Rey David
a las muchachas bonitas
te las cantamos  así.

despierta mi bien despierta
mira que ya amaneció,
y los pajarillos cantan
la luna ya se metió.

* * *

Que linda está la mañana
en que vengo a saludarte
venimos todos con gusto
y placer a felicitarte.

El día en que tu naciste
nacieron todas las flores
y en la pila del bautismo
cantaron los ruiseñores.

Ya viene amaneciendo
ya la luz del día nos dio
levántate de mañana
mira que ya amaneció.

25. Cuatro milpas
Lorenzo Barcelata (versión de Davíd Zaizar)

Cuatro milpas tan sólo han quedado
en el rancho que era mío ¡ay!
de aquella casita tan blanca y bonita
lo triste que está.

Los potreros están sin ganado
toditito se acabó ... ¡ay!
arrieros y peones toditos se fueron
ya nadie quedo

Me prestaras tus ojos morena,

26. El desterrado
versión Hnos. Zaizar (original arr. Manuel Ponce, 1914)  E/1

Desterrado me fui para el norte
desterrado por el gobierno
y al año volví
por aquel cariño inmenso
me fui con el fin
de por allá quedarme,
tan sólo el amor de esa mujer
me hizo volver.

Ay, que noches tan intranquilas
paso en la vida sin ti
ni un amigo ni un pariente

a quien quejarme
me fui con el fin

De por allá quedarme
tan sólo el amor, de esa mujer
me hizo volver.

27. Se me olvidó otra vez
Juan Gabriel
(versión Yolanda del Río )

Probablemente ya
de mí te has olvidado
y mientras tanto yo
(y sin embargo yo)
te seguiré esperando.

No me he querido ir
para ver si algún día
que tú quieras volver
me encuentres todavía.

Por eso aún estoy
en el lugar de siempre
en la misma ciudad
y con la misma gente.

Para que tú al volver
no encuentres nada extraño
y sea como ayer
y nunca más dejarnos.

Probablemente estoy
pidiendo demasiado
se me olvidaba que
ya habíamos terminado.

Que nunca volverás
que nunca me quisiste
se me olvidó otra vez
que sólo yo te quise.

27b. Se me olvidó otra vez—I Forgot Yet Again (translation)

You've probably already
forgotten me
and meanwhile I
will continue to wait for you

I have not wanted to go away
in order to see if one day
and you want to come back
you’ll still find me...

That's why I'm still here
in the place I've always been
in the same town
and with the same people

So that when you do come back
you won't find anything strange
and it may be like before
and we may never again part

Probably I am asking
too much
I keep on forgetting
that we're finished

That you will never return
that you never loved me
I forgot yet again
that it was only I who loved you...

28. Tu recuerdo y yo
Jose Alfredo Jimenez     en Fa/1

Estoy en el rincon de una cantina,
oyendo una cancion que yo pedi,
me estan sirviendo ahorita mi tequila,

y vengo aqui nomas a recordar,

29. El Rey
José Alfredo Jiménez

Yo sé bien que estoy afuera
pero el día que yo me muera
se que tendrás que llorar.

Llorar y llorar, llorar y llorar.

Dirás que no me quisiste,
pero vas a estar muy triste
y así te vas a quedar.

Con dinero y sin dinero
hago siempre lo que quiero
y mi palabra es la ley;
no tengo trono ni reina,
ni nadie que me comprenda,
pero sigo siendo el rey.

Una piedra en el camino
me enseño que mi destino
era rodar y rodar.

Rodar y rodar, rodar y rodar.

Despues me dijo un arriero
que no hay que llegar primero,
pero hay que saber llegar.

Con dinero y sin dinero.
Hago siempre lo que quiero
y mi palabra es la ley;
no tengo trono ni reina,
ni nadie que me comprenda,
pero sigo siendo el rey
